You will have a hard time believing, just as I am, that Ramesh and I are buying a house!! :D Yes, we are!! :D If everything works per plan, we get the keys on July 24th!! :) Oh my gosh, who would've imagined!! :)
It is a gorgeous single-family home in one of the most charming neighborhoods of San Francisco (or at least so we think!) :) Pics will be up soon :) In the meantime, pass on your best wishes!! :)
Among other great news, my Toronto solo went off really well! :) We have some awesome shots from those too, so will share them soon - perhaps on Facebook. It was indeed quite incredible to have an entire training session with the charming Menaka Thakkar and of course, my idol, Sujata Mohapatra. Learnt tons!!
Will keep this short...am too excited to update about anything else! hahaha

Did any of you watch Obama's speech about an hour ago? It was so extremely powerful that i was moved to tears! havent heard such a brilliant orator in a long, long time! And I am very happy and relieved that he has finally clinched the nomination. As for Hillary, i have not liked her since day 1 (of the race) and i am just hoping that she gets out of the pic as soon as possible (after doing what she can to heal her supporters).
Moving on to other things, eljaying has been at the back of my mind for a while and i have been wanting to post something - nothing in particular, but just generally, getting back to blogging... Facebook has obviously been taking up a *lot* of the social time i spend online. i am now going to try and rechannel some of that time to my LJ :) By the way, does anyone have a Facebook app for Lj that they'd recommend? LiveJournal Connect has a hopelessly low rating.
One of the other reasons I am back to blogging is bcoz of my job! I don't remember if i had posted this already, but i now work at the Institute of International Education in San Francisco :) I take care of communications for Women in Technology, a program that empowers women in 9 countries in the Middle East & North Africa. Check out the website or contact me if you are interested in knowing more :) So i have spending a lot of time surfing tens of blogs from the Middle East and oh boy, has it been a ride! I revisited Baghdad Burning and several other blogs that made me re-realize how powerful a means of communication a blog is!! And so, here i am, even though all i do is ramble :P
Among other news, I have gotten back to Odissi in a way far far bigger than what i had first anticipated. So after moving to the US last year and deciding to take it easy (viz. not work for a while), i quickly realized that i needed *something* to fill the void relocating to a new place with very few friends had created. Plus i really missed dancing in groups and performing with a troupe. And so, i started looking for odissi teachers in the bay area and oh boy, am i lucky to have found a teacher as committed and thorough as Niharika Mohanty (Rini Apa as i call her). I have already participated in 2 intensive workshops with Kumkum Lal and Sujata Mohapatra and helped incorporate Rini apa's dance institution - and you wouldn't believe what it is called - Guru Shradha!!! :D We have started performing and in fact just this weekend, had a wonderful performance at the Asian Arts Museum here in San Francisco. And guess who I requested to be our official photographer, none other than thaths and here are his gorgeous snaps. Neha Kumar was our other lovely photographer and you can see all her photos here. :) Let me know which are your favorites :) Here is a sample of their work:

Am *so* glad I requested them both to come take snaps for us. Now we have soooo many lovely options to use for Guru Shradha's website :)
Ramesh is in Korea since last Tuesday and is coming back this Friday. its been the longest we've been apart for since our wedding so as can be imaginable, it isnt easy, but am managing. It feels good to be driving around by myself (got my license a couple of months back) and independent in a very different sort of way :)
I have also been cooking a lot of yummy stuff - not regularly though, which is perhaps why i am still enjoying it so much :P Tried baked eggplant parmesan last week when Ramesh's family friends visited us from Atlanta. And as Srini uncle, a foodie himself, went on to say, "the eggplant just melted in my mouth, which is exactly how eggplant should be!" Felt awesome to be praised 1. by a enthusiastic cook and 2. by a family friend of ramesh's parents, who i was meeting for the 1st time 3. for a dish i had made for the 1st time! hehehe
Ok, it is about 9pm and even though it is nowhere close to my bedtime, i am going to sign off coz this has already become quite a long post but also coz i have tons of chores to take care of before friday, when ramesh comes home!! yipeeeeeeeeee!! :D

You know I find it so strange that after being *such* a close part of me and my life for so many years (while I was in Japan, i must note!), LJ is now something that barely even crosses my mind! isn't that sad? i mean, not to say that i have completely forgotten about all the cool people i got to meet through blogging and all that, but just that i dont feel the need or urge to blog anymore. which makes me wonder if i used to blog only out of some sort of loneliness...again, weird considering how i really dont think it was that...oh well, whatever it was, i obviously am not so enthu about blogging again...especially coz it takes soooo much time to follow all ur favorite peoples' blogs and it just seems like my priorities are different now...like...err...facebook? :P oh gosh, what a loser i am! :D
anyway, on to sunnier things, dont remember what i had written in my last blog but basically, i am totally living it up in san francisco. it is a gorgeous city (even though i have such a soft spot for japanese towns and cities that SF still isnt right up there yet!) and i am making the most of my time here. its actually been a little over 7 months now since i moved here and no, i am not regretting it at all. i mean, of course, i'd be lying if i say i don't wish i were in japan today or that i don't doubt my decision sometimes...but then, don't we all have moment when we think the grass is greener on the other side? :)
for those of you who don't know, i am on an extended honeymoon! so basically, i am not working right now. so have had oodles of time to myself and to spend with my loving and lovable hubby! we've done a fair bit of traveling since i came here...went to virginia to visit his parents a couple of times, LA more than a couple of times, camping trips to joshua tree national park and point reyes national park, attended a wedding in seattle. and then of course, i did 2 art of living courses -the advanced one with ravi shankar himself! that was quite something! but i guess the highlight of my time here in the US so far is my re-dedication to odissi :) i restarted learning in july and have attended 2 very intensive workshops - with kumkum lal and sujata mohapatra - since then. i mean, dance means so much to me now that sometimes, the whole household revolves around it :) it is an incredible feeling, to be able to get back to something that has meant so much to you over the years with so much passion again :)
oh and how i can forget to mention about my cooking experiments! i am SUCH an enthu cook!! i try everything from chinese to japanese to italian to north indian to south indian !! :D and i love it! i mean, i find it hard to believe that i am the same person who till a few years back used to find it a waste of time to even spend time in the kitchen. and now, i am having so much fun discovering the joys of it! :)
alright, i think i've given you all a fair idea of what my last several months have looked like. now for the present :) yesterday was black friday and u don't want to know how much ramesh and i splurged on shopping!! :D oh gawd, oh gawd :D but oh boy, was it fun! i guess i hadnt really "shopped" since the wedding, so it felt great to just walk in to nice stores and pick up whatever u liked! :D so now i can boast of 2 new sweaters, a new jacket, a pair of new black boots, new leg warmers, 2 new clutch bags, a new pair of jeans and some more stuff that needs to be bought today! :P oh and trust me, ramesh's booty list is much longer than mine!!! :D
this weekend we need to do a lot more shopping also bcoz i am heading to london the week after next (yaaay!) and then to india (yipeeeee!!!!) :D as if the last 7 months haven't been vacation enough, i am going off for over a month!! :D will be back only in mid-jan so i'm going to be gone a while. but no, i am not leaving dear husband at home alone. he'll be joining me a little over 2 weeks soon enough and we go jet-setting around india - to bombay, orissa and madras - using delhi as base of course while he's there. :D
oh and u know what, the biggest news perhaps is that i will start working from jan!! more details on that later but basically, it is going to be one hell of a whole new chapter! :D
so i guess this counts as a decent post for the time being? and very unsurprisingly, i thoroughly enjoyed writing it! :P so for all u know, i blogging bug may bite me again! :P
but for now, that's all from me! :)

I have been having SUCH a good time - especially of late - that I wonder why I ever complain about anything. So let me see, what all has happened since my last LJ update? Among lots of other things,
- I went to a Tainted Love Concert at the Red Devil Lounge. They're an awesome cover band for songs from the 80's and Ramesh and I had a blast there :)
- Spent a long lazy afternoon at a downtown salon and felt a tad guilty a little later about the big hole it had burnt in my pocket. but Ramesh, as usual, is such a sweetheart and told me it was worth it!! hehehe
- Started my Art of Living course, which i am loving. Too bad it ends tomorrow. BUT...guess what! I am going to Pomona (near LA) next month, to take the Advanced Course, and that too with Sri Sri (Sri?) Ravi Shankar!! :D Crazy where life takes us eh!:)
- Did a weekend trip to LA, where Mahesh would be moving shortly. All we did, apart from the 10 hour drive up and down, was test drive cars at different dealerships! Felt quite stud-like sitting in cool beamers and infiniti G35s and lexus sports cars! Fun to have a flash b-i-l! hehehe
- Went (and dragged Ramesh too) for a dance audition with the largest Bollywood dance company in the area called Naach!! :D They were looking for dancers for their professional team and thought it would be fun to go check it out. No surprises that we didn't make it (for those who don't know, Ramesh is a really good Bollywood dancer! :D No, really! He's danced at Stanford's Mela not once, but twice!!) . The one girl they selected was waaaay better than us! But I learnt some uber cool Bollywood steps! hehehe
- Bumped into an old friend of my dad's on the Stanford campus (wow!) and invited him and his daughter over for dinner. Spent that entire day cooking terrific Chinese food and oh boy, was it worth it :)
- Went to the SF Ethnic Dance Festival on Saturday night and saw some great performances. Felt great being back on the cultural scene of the city I live in :)
- Enjoyed the brief glimpse of the Pride Parade that Ramesh and I could afford in our busy schedule on Sunday.
- Met up with fantastic new people and reconnected with some lovely old ones :)
- Yesterday, I spent all day showing an aunt and her friend, who incidentally happens to be the Election Commissioner of India (!!!!) around town. How random!! :D
Ok enough of what I've been up to. spotty_sri and i have been thinking of having a get-together for LJ-ers in the area. Any takers?? :D The San Francisco Symphony has a couple of free concerts in July...8th and 15th July (both Sundays) actually. Does a picnic on a bright Sunday afternoon in Stern Grove, listening to mischievous music from Rossini, elegant music from Mozart, and joyous music from Beethoven sound like your kind of thing...Karthi, Shashi, Sofie, Thaths, Madhu, Kanaka, Viksit? :)

Anybody who claims to love Indian music, must love A.R.Rahman's music...Roja, Taal, Bombay, Rang De Basanti...he's churned out tons of awesome stuff! And when Ankur (a classmate from school) invited us to join his friends for a Rahman concert in the area, i was game without a second thought! Ramesh had to spend that weekend in Vegas so though a tad apprehensive about being out with SO many new people, i joined Ankur on Saturday for the concert and am i not glad i did!
Spent the entire day with Karthi in Santana Row, one of my favorite-est places in the area, eating, shopping, drinking coffee over tons of chit-chat and laughs, before Ankur and gang came to pick me up to her place. Our seats were decently located and even though we considered trying our luck with better seats, soon the entire Oracle Arena was full with desi music lovers! The performers included Hariharan, Chitra, Sukhwinder Singh, Chitra, Sivamani and a few others (probably more popular down south) and we were lucky to hear beauties like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Ey Hairathe, Chanda Re, Ramta Jogi, Roja Jaaneman, Humma Humma, Rubaru, Tere Bina and Rang De Basanti! There were some Tamil songs that they performed too and I was introduced to some terrific numbers from Boys, which I am downloading right now...hehehe There were some very enthusiastic people sitting behind us who were screaming along all the songs from Rajnikant's upcoming (?) Shivaji :D The concert lasted 3 hours and we too were at our feet every time they played a dance number that we knew! :P Basically had tonnes of fun!!
Ankur and I were so charged up that we were all set for an after party to continue the fun but most of the rest wanted to retire :( In the end a few of us met up at Denny's and after a late-night bite, headed to Ankur's place for a small party. According to some crazy California state law, you can't buy alcohol between 2 and 6 am so the party was more of just listening to some nice music and lots of talking. In the end, Ankur, Sheel and I were up chatting till 5am! :) Even though I still could have gone on, we called it a day and I fell asleep with a nice smile on my face. This evening had brought back memories of my days in Japan - both at uni and Sanyo - when I would pull off all-nighters like this with friends oh so often! Perhaps, finally, America is beginning to seem like a nicer place :)
Sunday went by without nothing special. Met with Robb, an ex-intern at Sanyo, who has now joined the firm here in the US, for lunch. Strangely enough though, I still seem to know so much more about the company! These Japanese companies just don't seem to know how to share info with their employees outside the HQ!!!
It was so wonderful to see Ramesh again at night....even though he was gone only for 2 days, i was more than happy to have him back and so was he :)
Me busy downloading some wonderful Rahman songs that i discovered i didn't have :P Will be off to my yoga class soon. Till next time, here's a funny forward about how clever kids are that I received:

Ramesh leaves for Vegas today for his friend's bachelor party....what fun yaa!!!! But I'll be spending the weekend all by myself, which doesnt sound like too much fun! :( Oh well, will be going for my first concert in the States tomorrow...and that too, an A.R.Rahman one...nice eh?? ;)
I've been spending a LOT of time on Facebook and Orkut...wonder what it is...I mean, why should I be *so* interested in knowing what's happening in others' lives...esp. when I barely know them, or worse, when I dont even know them!!! I really should restrict myself...*sigh*
I've got tonnnnnes of mails to reply to....some dating back to March! I wonder for how much longer I can use the 'been busy settling down' excuse!! :P
I cooked eggplant for the first time yesterday!! And guess what, Ramesh and I were licking our plates clean!! :D I never thought I would enjoy cooking *this* much! Am so glad, and must say, relieved, that I am! :) But even then, I am gonna have to try out more varieties of recipes using my standard veggies, which happen to be, onions, tomatoes, bell peppers and mushrooms, and sometimes, cauliflowers, carrots, cabbage, potatoes and broccoli. Pretty sparse eh? hehehe
My dad retired yesterday. I wonder what thoughts must be crossing his head as he reaches this milestone in his life. He's been looking forward to this day since the earliest days of my life and I am sure he is going to enjoy it a lot. But till he settles into some sort of a routine or gets used to the lack of it, it might not be as easy as he perhaps made it out to be.
You might see some more posts from me over the weekend...maybe a wedding preparation guide or something....hehehe

I wonder why I find it so hard to take out time to blog considering I spend SO much time online...maybe that is in fact the reason why by the time I feel like posting something to my LJ, I am already sick of sitting in front of the computer!
Anyway, we had a really awesome long weekend. On Saturday, we had invited 7 of Ramesh's French and Lebanese friends over for dinner. Basically, a good common French friend of theirs, Flo, moved to Zurich a couple of months back and they always used to get together at his place for food and the addictive card game, Wanted (called Bang! in English). So we decided to revive the tradition and have them all over :) At first, I'd thought I would make some Chinese food, since I seem to have discovered some really good recipes recently. But a couple of our French friends, Flo and Jeff, had gifted us a crepe maker and so when Jeff suggested we should inaugurate that, we decided to have a crepe party!
Spent all of Saturday morning and afternoon shopping - closed our Crate and Barrel Registry and bought loads of nice glasses and a beautiful wall candle holder among other things there. Picked up all the groceries for the party and were quite excited about having smoked salmon, ham, salami, exotic cheeses, strawberries and a ton of other yummies as toppings for our crepes.
Jeff was sweet enough to come a little early to help me prepare the batter and it wasnt as straightforward as his recipe sounded. Am glad he was there to do it with me this first time coz now I am so much more confident about how to do it! :) Used a lot of our kitchen utensils for the first time and even he loved our pots and pans :P Considering how awesome a chef Jeff is, i was quite flattered! hehehe He then taught me how to toss the crepes up and oh boy, was i nervous doing it at first! hehehe it was a lot of fun though and by the end of it, i must've tossed what, maybe about 30 crepes, if not more! :P oh, i did drop half of one though! ;P
Ramesh and I were quite nervous initially of how so many of us would fit into our small studio but everyone seemed really comfortable - or perhaps they were too engrossed with their game/food/wine :P Plus it is never too hard to please bachelors now is it! :P After dessert, we went downstairs to play ping pong and basketball and oh boy, was it fun to shed some sweat at midnight!! :D All in all, the party was a great success and Ramesh and I had big smiles plastered on our faces at the end of it. Plan to entertain guests far more frequently henceforth :)
On Sunday, we had planned to go see the Latino Carnaval in the Mission district and meet up with old school friend, Sahiba and her hubby, Suchit there. The Carnaval was alright I guess...the one I'd seen in Japan was far more impressive...but then, we'd arrived at the fag end of the festival anyway. With all restaurants in the area closed, we had to walk *quite* a distance to get a cab and then had a late lunch at Momo's, this nice restaurant right across Ball Park. They'd parked their car near that and since our house was only a stone-throw away, I insisted them come over for tea. Our tea party went on for hours and they left well after 7. It was a fun day and we wrapped it up by watching Before Sunset, the sequel to Before Sunrise, which we'd watched just the day before :P (New Netflix addicts! :P)
Monday was another packed day, which started with us deciding to jog across the Golden Gate Bridge, with none other than sohnipreet !! it was a first for me to meet an lj-er for the first time for such an intense activity and it was fun :) as the parking lots were full, it being the 70th anniversary of the bridge and all, we had to park under the bridge. the hike up wasnt that bad at all but on our way back, it ended up being quite disastrous as that road had been blocked and we had to walk a couple of miles along the highway (!!) to get to our car again. anyway, the jog (errr...we walked for the most part!) was fun and I'm glad we did it! Despite meeting her for the first time, we blabbered away like long-lost friends :)
We had to rush back home as we were expecting some family friends over. So Monday afternoon/evening, we spent walking along the Embarcadero with Samba uncle and family. Spent some time window-shopping at the Ferry Building and then at H&M at Union Square before heading back to the Embarcadero for a yummy dinner at Gordon Biersch.
So basically we had a pretty intense long weekend and we are glad we were able to do so much fun stuff. Too bad I'm down with a bad throat right now, but otherwise, life is great :)

After more than 4 years of serving me *really* well, my Casio Exilim EZ-3 wants to bid me farewell. The lens seems to have developed some issue that doesn't allow it to open anymore :( SO when I turn the power on, I hear a strange noise of some kind of a motor inside and the shutter vibrates in an effort to open but can't :( My display then shows "Lens Error" and disappears. *sigh*
So, I have decided to buy myself a new point and shoot and I am here to get some first-hand advice from any of you with more knowledge/experience with cameras than me :) Had I been in Japan, I would've had far more options but I think here in the US, I am stuck with either a Canon or a Sony. The other manufacturers just don't seem to have enough good ultra-compact models to compete with in this market.
Anyway, might be a silly reason, but since I have so many SD cards, I am leaning towards going for a Canon and am seriously considering the Canon PowerShot SD800, SD700 and SD 750. Considering I am not very demanding in terms of features, and having used digital cameras for so long now, I guess I should just go to a store and get a feel of the models and pick what I like best...till then, any pointers? :)
On a totally different note, its been a weekend of chance meetings LJ-wise. First, at the Tandoori Night at Google on Friday, this guy walks up to me and asks me if I'm Shradha and I'm like, he looks familiar but I dont think I've met him before! And then, he introduces himself as Gaurav Jain...he wasnt on LJ but had been dropping comments on my LJ ages back and we were friends on orkut and all! hahaha What a blast from the past! :D
And then, on Saturday, as Ramesh and I were picking up some random stuff from Walmart before rushing to Tara's b'day bash (a bollywood theme party no less!), I saw a face I had seen a couple of days back. I was trying to place it when realization dawned. It was spotty_sri of course! i had just seen pics from her vancouver trip! hahaha It was awesome bumping into her and Sri and I hope we meet up really soon again! Oh and yesterday, mona1610 and I spent an hour on the phone!! Ramesh was quite amused by the 2 chance meets and the long-distance phone call...actually, so am I! the world feels so freaking small!!! :D I luv it! :)

Gosh, its been *ages* since i last eljayed man! Posting an update has been on mind for quite some time now, but with D-Day just 2 weeks away, guess I couldn't have found a better excuse...:P
spent some time catching up on the latest with all of you. felt really good to be "back in touch"!:p
As for me, life couldn't have been better. After Peace Boat (till where you have all been updated with painful details!!hehe), I spent 2.5 months in the US. Took the GMAT, did *really* well, applied to 5 b-schools and flew back to India via Tokyo, where I met a few of my closest friends :D
back in India, and its been a whole new ball game altogether. A day after I arrived, Ramesh's mother arrived and we spent 5 full days shopping and checking out venues and stuff! :D A day after she left, I went to bangalore to attend ggollerkeri's wedding (was a grand affair and i was meeting him for the 1st time in 9 years!!:D) and after spending 5 days with my sis and bro-in-law, took a train by myself to orissa!:) Shuffled between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack for 5 days, saying hullo to aunts and uncles and flew back to delhi with my cute l'll granny on 4th feb. Been in the city ever since and spent all of february doing almost nothing but shop!! :D [i think i'll need another post to discuss the wedding preps in detail, listing (on popular demand!:P) stores/salons/misc. tips for brides-to-be! :)]
Holi was good fun - even though i had decided not to play this year (so as to not ruin my skin!ha!)! rajasen came down to delhi and we spent our umpteenth holi together :)
So anyway, with all shopping taken care of and preparations done, i am quite set! :) Ramesh's family arrives on the 17th, he comes on the 18th. Other guests start arriving around the 22nd. Oh and guess what...I have 36 friends coming from overseas all the way just for the wedding!! :D Most of them are coming from Japan, and there are others from Switzerland, Dubai, HK and all over :D Really touched that so many people are coming down to make my special day all the more special...*sigh*
Thanks God, once again, for everything :) Keeping my fingers crossed. Hoping everything will go off smoothly. :)
More later :)

This might be news to you and then again it might not :) What started 11 years ago as casual camaraderie and over the years developed into a deep friendship is all set to renew itself as a lifelong commitment. Yes, I am actually getting married! The lucky man is Ramesh, whose name you've probably seen peppered all over my LJ.
Details will have to wait but the long and short of it is that the obligatory ceremonies will take place in Delhi on March 24th and 25th, 2007.
Life is taking exciting new turns and I have my seat-belt on!! :)

(From a funny forward)
Question: What is the truest definition of Globalization? Answer: Princess Diana's death.
Question: How come? Answer: An English princess
with an Egyptian boyfriend
crashes in a French tunnel,
driving a German car
with a Dutch engine,
driven by a Belgian who was drunk
on Scottish whisky,
followed closely by Italian Paparazzi,
on Japanese motorcycles;
treated by an American doctor,
using Brazilian medicines.
This is sent to you by Indian,
using Bill Gates 's technology,
and you're probably reading this on your computer,
that use Taiwanese chips,
and a Korean monitor,
assembled by Bangladeshi workers
in a Singapore plant,
transported by Pakistan lorry-drivers,
hijacked by Indonesians,
unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen,
and trucked to you by Mexican illegals.....
That, my friend, is Globalization.
